Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Kat@Sheathcleaning.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Equine sheath cleaning is the careful cleaning and inspection of a gelding or stallion’s sheath and surrounding area to remove built-up dirt, smegma, debris, and potential “bean” build-up, while checking for any visible abnormalities that may require veterinary attention.

Regular sheath care can help support your horse’s comfort, hygiene, and overall wellbeing.

Common signs can include:

✔ Tail swishing or irritation
✔ Kicking at the stomach or sheath area
✔ Swelling or puffiness
✔ Sensitivity when touched
✔ Excessive rubbing
✔ Strong odour
✔ Difficulty urinating
✔ Visible discharge or unusual build-up
✔ Increased fly irritation in warmer months

If you notice anything unusual, we’re always happy to advise whether veterinary support may be more appropriate.

Not necessarily.

Some horses require more regular attention than others, while some naturally stay cleaner and experience fewer issues.

Factors such as age, environment, sensitivity, fly activity, and individual anatomy can all play a role.

If your horse is showing signs of discomfort, unusual behaviour, swelling, odour, excessive rubbing, or difficulty urinating, it may be worth arranging an assessment.

Yes, when carried out by an experienced professional using a calm, horse-first approach.

Horse welfare and comfort are always our priority, and we work patiently to keep the experience as low-stress as possible.

If a horse becomes too uncomfortable or a veterinary issue is suspected, we will always stop and advise accordingly.

No.

We do not sedate horses; this must only be carried out by a qualified veterinary professional.

Many horses tolerate the process very well with calm handling and patience, but if sedation is required, we would advise booking via your vet and we can work alongside them.

No harsh restraint methods are used.

We always take a calm, patient, horse-led approach.

For everyone’s safety, we may ask owners or handlers to assist with holding their horse where appropriate.

While we are highly experienced in recognising potential concerns, we do not diagnose medical conditions.

If we identify anything unusual, such as swelling, lesions, discharge, growths, irritation, or other abnormalities, we will advise you to seek veterinary assessment.

We have successfully helped many owners identify issues early that required veterinary attention.

Yes, where safely and appropriately possible.

A “bean” is a build-up of hardened smegma that can collect in the urethral diverticulum and may cause discomfort or urinary issues.

This will always be approached gently and only if safe for the horse.

This varies between horses.

Some may benefit from checks every 6–12 months, while others may need less frequent attention.

We’ll always provide honest advice based on your horse’s individual needs rather than recommending unnecessary treatments.

Please ensure:

  • Your horse is in a safe, quiet environment
  • They are reasonably clean and dry
  • A competent handler is available if needed
  • The horse is comfortable being handled

If your horse has behavioural concerns, please let us know in advance.

Absolutely.

We regularly work alongside veterinary professionals and other equine specialists where wider welfare concerns are identified.

We believe collaborative care delivers the best outcomes for horses.
